These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things

I have this thing that I love, and it’s when musicians cover other musicians music. I don’t know why I love that so much but I really really do.

At BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge a couple week ago, a band I really like, Kings of Leon covered Robyn. Full disclosure, Robyn’s “Robyn Is Here” was the first album I ever bought with my own money.  AND I LOVED IT. And I continue to love here to this day. To. This. Day.

Basically this is two of my favorite things combined and I might have clapped after I heard it. By “might have” I meant “enthusiastically” and also, I was at work.

Do you have some favorite covers to share??

  1. Love this mash up of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by UK grime/rap artist Dizzee Rascal, recorded for a new years eve show a couple of years ago.

  2. AWESOME. I feel like I’ve told you this, but one of my favorite albums of all-time (which I bought when I was 16) is Jennifer Love Hewitt’s self-titled album, singing a lot of R&B covers.

I feel like there must be at least 20 songs I could name here. I also love when bands do acoustic covers of their own songs. Like Matchbox 20 or Bush. Oh. Have you ever seen the old YouTube vid of Hayley Williams from Paramore covering Lady GaGa? I want to be her.

  3. Ok please don’t judge me but I love “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke because it’s a cover of my favorite song- “Give it Up” by Marvin Gaye. Of course now Mr Thicke is refusing to pay royalties to the Gaye family, which is douchey.

  4. Found this one a few days ago and I haven’t stopped listening since! Also Ellie Goulding’s version of Mirrors is good too.

I love musicians covering others. I’ve got a thing for covers of songs!

  5. Tyna S. Cline says:

I’m of a different generation, but the love I feel for my cover of choice is no less than yours: Natalie Merchant covered David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” at a 1999 concert in NYC. The concert was recorded and the resulting album is nothing short of phenomenal.
