Today, my friends, is St. Valentine’s Day. Instead of lecturing you on who the real St. Valentine was (or wasn’t) and the sticky end he came to (pun intended because there was a stick involved), I’ve decided to share some of my absolute favorite things about Valentine’s Day. I’ve always loved this holiday and not just because I think it’s hilarious how a nasty execution spawned a lovers holiday. I mean, sure, that’s part of it, but I also like other things.
1.Chocolate is everywhere. This is never a bad thing. Also, if you eat it on strawberries it’s probably good for you.
2. Flowers are everywhere. It’s lovely to walk into a store and see Spring when it’s definitely Winter outside.
3. Valentines are so delightfully corny. In fact, as far as I’m concerned, the cornier the better.
4. Teenagers are making out EVERYWHERE and it’s really fun to make disapproving faces at them and remark on their lack of modesty. It really makes one feel like a grown-up.
5. Loads of people are wearing red and then I can say things like “Does your shirt represent the blood of St. Valentine?” and make people pretty uncomfortable. Sometimes, playing Debbie Downer can be fun.
6. Any reference you make to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre is both unwanted and necessary. History is fun!
7. Champagne y’all. Lots of it.
8. I get to hear Boyz II Men songs all day long.
9. There is guaranteed awkwardness to witness and participate in. I will have blog fodder for weeks!
10. The candy hearts with phrases on them. They say such nice things! It gives my self-esteem a little boost and that’s quite the accomplishment when I’m also concurrently stuffing my face with candy. Well played candy hearts. Well played.
Happy Valentine’s Day dearest readers! I love you with my whole aorta! <3

I’m totally with you on number eight… even though I still don’t know what “sympn’” is. Although I understand it ain’t easy.

At last a positive V Day post yay!!! I didn’t write one myself because I just don’t do V Day but it was nice to read yours….. and now I can’t stop thinking of chocolate coated bloody strawberries!!! Thanks a bunch and hope you had a good “day”
I agree…Eating strawberries with chocolate is good for you. Love the post:)
Happy Valentine’s Day, little lady! I hope you had a great day filled with chocolate and flowers and candy hearts.
I did indeed! I hope you had a nice one as well!
11. Posting a picture of Fabio is guaranteed to get you, like, 1,000 hits.
Excellent point! I should have thought of that!
Where I work it was theme day today. Balloons and flower and red and pink were everywhere! It was nice. Big fan of your posts. Them’s some good reasons to like Valentine’s Day I reckon.
Though I completely disagree with Boys II Men. More of an “I’m Sprung” by T-Pain kind of guy myself. But I’m old school like that.
Blog: http://livemotra.com/
Nothing wrong with a little old school.
I think you stole this list from my soul.
Happy Valentine’s Day, kindred spirit!
I may have stolen the list, but I left the soul just as I found it.
Happy Valentine’s Day friend!
4. Teenagers are making out EVERYWHERE and it’s really fun to make disapproving faces at them and remark on their lack of modesty. It really makes one feel like a grown-up.****
Hahhah I did this today n yeah I felt all grown up. Haha. They was pissn me of. Me on my way to meet a client soo late and tryn so hard to read a mail from my bb and I see em busy in a corner wall of a school buildn’n . I think my look said it all. Haha. I laughted till I got a cab
Good for you!!
chocolates and cheesy love songs… valentines day is fun even for single souls..
you are so right about everyone wearing red… i decided not wear red today…but i dont know how…absentmindedly, i was wearing a red check shirt over my tshirt…
I went all out on the red, but of course, mine is representative of St. Valentine’s blood.
Definitely #1 – bad enough that we found a great homestyle bakery nearby, but this year they offered white and dark chocolate dipped strawberries. My wife just had to look at me when I passed the store. No words needed – she got a dozen this morning for breakfast.
Look at you picking up on the code! Proud of you!
“Aravis also had many quarrels (and, I’m afraid, even fights) with Cor, but they always made it up again: so that years later, when they were grown up, they were so used to quarrelling and making it up again that they got married so as to go on doing it more conveniently. ” -the most romantic Narnia quote that came to mind.
I think that might be the most romantic Narnia quote period.
I think so, too! I’ve always loved that little bit.
Thanks for the Boyz II Men reference. It makes me feel good knowing I’m not the only one who still enjoys listening to their music!
I definitely do!
you left out the shiny balloons…because…nothing says I love you like a shiny 2 foot balloon that you have to anchor down in your living room so it won’t get caught up in your ceiling fan and cause the motor in the fan to burn out. $5 balloon, you get a new $200 ceiling fan. ha! Snort!
I’m sensing a lot of anger towards balloons….
The candy hearts! Especially the candy hearts! And have you noticed that they’ve changed the flavors? I’m all for nostalgia and not changing a good thing, but they don’t taste like soap anymore (not that the soapy flavors ever stopped me from eating them).
I had noticed they tasted better- yay for no soapy taste!
I love all of the heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. I bought a big box of chocolate truffles I could not resist, at Wal-Mart last week, with the noble intention of taking it to my parents for dinner. 40 hours later, there were no more truffles
You make a fine point – Nothing wrong with a holiday that fills our world with chocolate, pretty little Valentines, and flowers. Maybe some sparkly jewels.
That’s ok. I can’t tell you how many boxes of chocolates have met similar fates at my house.
Phew! (she wipes forhead free of sweat beads) Glad I’m no alone in my chocolate abuse.
Love #7, and #8, and well… hell, all of it! lol Happy Vday lady!
Thanks! Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
Its all about those candy hearts made from sugar, bones and chalk. lol
Mmm Mmmm Good.
I miss Boyz II Men… And I also miss En Vogue. But they were a little bitter at times about love so I guess that is an inappropriate comment given that it’s Valentine’s day.
BTW… Asking people if their red clothing is for the blood of St. Valentine… Brilliant! Pure diabolical genius! I may have to start doing that…
Ask away, I promise they’ll love it.
Nice post! Love this whole thing with my whole organ that goes thump, thump, boom, boom, swish, swish- blood flow of course… I will say number 7 is my fav.
Thanks! In the words of Mel Brooks “I don’t know what to say, so I’ll just say what’s in my heart. Baboom. Baboom. Baboom.”
Thanks for the giggle! As a teacher, I’m thanking God we’re out of school this week. The lovey-dovey-handsy-pansy teenagers would be crawling all over the school! It gets. Little annoying after some time to say, “no PDA…I don’t want to see you making babies. Take it home, just not here.”
Hahaha! I bet that does get a little ridiculous.
#9- Also my reason for crashing interventions and still attending family Christmas dinner
Amen to that!
With just the aorta? What about the superior vena cava?
Have a fantastic Valentine’s Day!
Well played!
I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!
my husband and I have started a battle to find the cheesiest grocery store offering. I found a reeses box with a photo insert cover- like he’s supposed to cherich this cardboard box forever?
Obviously. If I had a cardboard box with your picture in it, it would become one of my most prized possessions. I wonder if the store still has those in stock….
I like #8.
Personally, I like how everyone looks like they work at Target.
Absolutely! I know I sure do. In fact, I think I’ll do the Target Lady (from SNL) voice for the rest of the day.
The candy hearts – - they have such good taste.
Awww, shucks….you’re making me blush.
Hmmm. Valentine’s Day. Or V-Day. Or VD. At first it’s all hearts and flowers…then there’s some bickering and disagreement…and, finally, an uncomfortable feeling deep inside.
No wonder everyone eats so much chocolate today.
Don’t forget the champagne/wine/whiskey!
Yeh, I’m finding it difficult to accept the connection between murder/prosecution/death and flowers/chocolate/love. Perhaps I need some more of that champagne?
I think I’ll stick to points 5-7.
The champagne really helps.
hahaha, # 5 made me almost spit out my coffee! thanks for the laugh this morning!
Anytime!
My favorite Valentine’s Day memory:
Socially Awkward Grade School Paladin picking though the package of Valentines the night beforethe big day for the *really good* one to set aside for whatever cute little girl was my current favorite. Slipping that card into the approriate decorated brown paper sack when we distributed cards to each other in class the next day. And the nervous feeling in my stomach as I hoped *she* would see that card as the important declaration of my love and devotion like I did…..
Ok.. so what if she usually didn’t. It’s still hard to beat that feeling
Happy Valentine’s Day, GotC!
Oh, I definitely remember that feeling! It was pretty great! Happy Valentine’s Day Paladin!
I came home from kindergarten in tears because I had done the exact same thing for my “girl buddy” Sandy D., but DID NOT have a Valentine from her in my brown paper bag. The next day the teacher brought it to me. It had been put into someone ELSE’S paper bag instead. Etched into my memory, fifty years later.
“Oh, Sandy, can’t you see, I’m in misery…”
You’ve put Grease in my head!
Ha!
I think this is the first time I’ve heard someone openly loving Valentine’s Day. Maybe I run in really bitter circles.
There doesn’t seem to be too many of us out there, but I do love it! Even when I’ve been single and bitter because seriously, those candy hearts really give me a boost.
I bet the candy heart was the origin of all those grammatically nasty internet abbreviations.
BTW, I think U R GR8.
Too true. Too true. And really, do they save that much time?
THX!
This might be strange but i avoid going out on Valentine’s Day because of possible encounters with teddy bears. I have a phobia of those especially the humungous ones that girls bring around. I don’ t know if there’s someone out there who’s just as scared.
But yes, I agree with the chocolates!
Yikes! If I were you, I would stay in on Valentine’s Day too! Those bears are everywhere!
